What is it? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍โ™‚๏ธ

If FFP is liquid gold, then Cryoprecipitate is mother’s milk! “Cryo” is a rich mixture of clotting factors that are formed from the precipitate of thawed FFP. It contains factor VIII, von Willbrand factor (vWF), fibrinogen, factor XIII and fibronectin.

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is it used for?

Fibrinogen deficiency in the setting of bleeding, surgery, trauma or coagulopathy primarily to treat fibrinogen deficiency.

๐Ÿ‘‰ When should it be avoided? โŒ
It should not be used to treat haemophilia, von Willebrand’s disease or factor deficiencies when other specific treatments are available.

๐Ÿ‘‰ What’s in the bag? ๐Ÿ‘œ

~ 36ml of precipitate containing:
- Fibrinogen 400mg
- Factor VIII 150 IU
- vWF 250 IU

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is the dose? ๐Ÿ’Š

Dosing depends on the patient’s size and the clinical situation, but a common starting dose is 10 units. 1 unit per 5-10kg body weight increases fibrinogen by 0.5-1g/L.

๐Ÿ‘‰ How is it given? ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ’‰

It is thawed in the lab, and sometimes multiple units are mixed with saline. It should be thoroughly mixed by inverting the bag, then can be given as fast as tolerated within 4 hours.
