So Rahul needs a blood transfusion. How can we be sure his antibodies will not attack the new blood cells and cause a serious transfusion reaction? 😡‍πŸ’«

πŸ‘‡ Here’s how πŸ‘‡

Crossmatching is performed so the lab can select and send you blood that is compatible for transfusion. The main concern is whether Rahul’s serum will attack the donor red cells. 🩸πŸ§ͺ

A secondary concern is whether the donor serum contains antibodies that will attack Rahul’s red cells. But as we are only giving Rahul a small dose of donor serum, this is less important.

Here are the main steps:

πŸ‘‰πŸ½ Rahul’s blood is first tested for ABO blood group and RhD status.
πŸ‘‰πŸ½ Then a bag that matches (or is compatible) is chosen.
πŸ‘‰πŸ½ A few drops of Rahul’s serum is mixed with a few drops of the donor blood.
πŸ‘‰πŸ½ The mixture is warmed to body temperature.
πŸ‘‰πŸ½ A few drops of Anti-human Globulin are added to screen for antibodies
πŸ‘‰πŸ½ The sample is spun in a centrifuge
πŸ‘‰πŸ½ The sample is examined for agglutination.
πŸ‘‰πŸ½ No agglutination means that Rahul can safely receive his blood transfusion!
