So Rahul needs a blood transfusion. How can we be sure his antibodies will not attack the new blood cells and cause a serious transfusion reaction? π΅π«
Crossmatching is performed so the lab can select and send you blood that is compatible for transfusion. The main concern is whether Rahul’s serum will attack the donor red cells. π©Έπ§ͺ
A secondary concern is whether the donor serum contains antibodies that will attack Rahul’s red cells. But as we are only giving Rahul a small dose of donor serum, this is less important.
ππ½ Rahul’s blood is first tested for ABO blood group and RhD status.
ππ½ Then a bag that matches (or is compatible) is chosen.
ππ½ A few drops of Rahul’s serum is mixed with a few drops of the donor blood.
ππ½ The mixture is warmed to body temperature.
ππ½ A few drops of Anti-human Globulin are added to screen for antibodies
ππ½ The sample is spun in a centrifuge
ππ½ The sample is examined for agglutination.
ππ½ No agglutination means that Rahul can safely receive his blood transfusion!
