The T-piece (aka Ayres T-piece, Mapleson F system) is used in paediatric patients under 20kg! 🙏🏻
Unlike regular adult anaesthetic circuits, the T-piece often follows the paediatric patient to PACU and provides precise positive pressure and PEEP. Perfect! 🙌🏽
Here’s why you might like it: 🙋🏼♀️
👉🏻 Less dead space (faster induction)
👉🏻 Low resistance (easy for little people to breathe)
👉🏻 Portable, light weight, versatile.
👉🏻 Provides tactile feedback on lung compliance
👉🏻 Ability to provide immediate positive airway pressure in recovery
Here’s why you might not like it: 🙅🏽
👉🏻 Limited scavenging
👉🏻 High fresh gas flow requirement (>6L)
👉🏻 Less environmentally friendly
👉🏻 May underestimate ETCO2 in children <10kg
👉🏻 No mechanical ventilation
Now you know about the T-Piece!
